Almut Metzroth grew up in Germany in the 1930s and '40s. After high school, she served her required practical training preceding the study of landscaping design. She also studied foreign languages. At Dittrich Interpreters College she met her husband, Bert. Together with their first of three sons, they emigrated to the United States of America. She obtained B.A. and M.Ed. degrees, taught German for twenty-eight years in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and soon coordinated the town's foreign language program. Upon retirement, she and her husband sailed their boats in the waters of South Florida and the Bahamas.

During and after their voyages, she wrote and translated articles as well as published her autobiography, Thorns and Roses: A Life in the Context of History. The Florida Writers Association awarded the book a Royal Palm Literary Award in the History/Biography/Memoir category. She and her husband live at the Treasure Coast of Florida.
